Less is More

The first great lie in health and exercise:  You must work out like a fiend to get any results.  You must do hours and hours of aerobic exercise in order to burn any fat.  And it better hurt . . . remember, no pain, no gain. 
The truth is, less is more.  In the beginning, the workouts in the ALIVE protocol only take about 15 minutes each day.  They progress throughout the program to be about 45-50 minutes long, but you are never devoting any more than an hour to working out.  How can that be?
Your body wants to survive.  It wants to be ALIVE.  And in order to remain alive, it must be in balance.  If the body’s systems determine that you are continually breaking it down by exercising too much, your body will fight the very process that you think is making you better. 
The ALIVE protocol not only presents your body with the right balance in terms of amount of exercise, but creates the right balance in terms of challenging your muscles and improving your cardiovascular system.  Resistance training and aerobic exercise are both necessary for your body to function at its best.  Too much or too little of either can be counter-productive and even detrimental to your goals. 

More to Less

Yet another lie:  You must restrict your food intake severely in order to lose any weight.  You must not eat carbohydrates.  You must not eat fat.  You can only eat cabbage soup or pre-made shakes with a list of chemical ingredients so long and so unpronounceable that you give up, close your eyes and just chug the whole thing, hoping all those chemicals will go directly to burning the fat around your belly.  REALLY????
The truth is, your body functions best with a steady intake of quality food.  In other words, you really need to eat more to weigh less.  Is it really possible?  Of course it is.  Remember, your body wants to survive and be ALIVE.  It wants to be fueled with the best ingredients possible.  It needs to have all of the macronutrients:  protein, carbohydrates and fats.  As you fuel your body with the right ingredients, in the right amounts and at the right intervals, it knows what to do with those ingredients and the body is allowed to flourish.  It builds where it needs to build and it burns when it needs to burn . . . and the compulsion to store fuel as fat is removed.

Vitality through Renewal

The last lie:  It’s just part of getting older.  Can we renew ourselves so that aging is not something to dread?  When we re- something, it means we are doing it again.  To reload a gun, it means you are loading it again.  To make something “new again” sounds difficult, doesn’t it?  Try as I might, I just couldn’t make my old Chrysler new again, so I had to go out and buy a new car.  We can’t just go buy a new body.  So is renewal possible for our bodies?  ALIVE is all about renewal on several different levels.  At the very core of your being, ALIVE is about cellular renewal . . . teaching your body to efficiently rid itself of the old, worn-out cells and create new, vital, cells that help your body function at its best.  The unique health profile that is completed with the ALIVE protocol proves that the diet and exercise is absolutely causing renewal in your body.   An extension of that inside, cellular renewal is the physical and emotional renewal that occurs with ALIVE as well.  Your more efficient cells learn to utilize fuel optimally, so the body holds on to less fat . . . you look better, you fit in your clothes better, you feel better about yourself, you approach each day more rested and more confident.  Does that sound like a new you?  The ALIVE protocol can touch each of us in the place where we are and transport us to a new vitality.  Some of us are always looking for the next, new challenge . . . I have had a passion to turn ordinary people into runners and good runners into extraordinary competitors.

Having been a distance coach at 4 major Universities (including Texas A&M), a 5000 meter American Record Holder, 4 Olympians, 1 Gold Medalist and 12 National Champions and coaching over 74 individual elite distance runners, my passion is on the roads and track.

The training principles are natural to me, because I grew up with them, lived them, used them, coached them and now it is your turn.  Training for the 2000 Olympic Trials made me realize that I had answers that millions of American’s wanted…
